Iron Man 3 focuses on Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) after the events of The Avengers which has left him with a sleeping problem and causes him to occasionally suffer from anxiety attacks. The film begins with a flashback to 1999 in Bern Switzerland which introduces the Extremis serum, Dr. Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) and Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) - two new and important characters.
Back to the present day of 2013 and we see Tony Stark and his new Mark 42 suit fly in separate pieces and "wrap" itself piece by piece around Tony. Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) gets a visit from a guy that used to pursue her and it is none other than Aldrich Killian a.k.a the new guy.
The Mandarin gets introduced into the plot as a leader of an international terrorist organization and responsible for multiple bombings taking place in various parts of America. Tony Starks is presumed dead by everyone when his mansion gets attacked by the Mandarin but he survives and begins an investigation into the Extremis serum and the mysterious bombings and how they are related.
WARNING
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
After watching the Iron Man 3 trailers and teasers I was really excited to finally see the Mandarin as the main villain in an Iron Man film but it turns out that the "Mandarin" we see in this movie is just an actor with drug and money problems hired by Aldrich Killian to become a symbol of evil / terrorism. The Mandarin we all expected him to be, the supervillian with superpowers from the ten power rings does not exist in this movie!! Felt really disappointed when it was revealed halfway through the plot.
The Extremis serum turns out to be the main problem of this whole entire story as it turns out to be something that taps into human DNA and is able to reprogram it and regenerate limbs and enhance strength and cure wounds. The "real" villain, when I say real I mean the actual main villain of the film and not the fake Mandarin turns out to be Aldrich Killian!! What a surprise that was and it turns out he has the Extremis serum in him so he has regenerative powers, super strength and can breathe fire!! (I'm not kidding, he actually breathes fire in a scene in the movie!!)
**END OF SPOILERS**
Besides the surprises, shocks and disappointments, Iron Man 3 has lots of funny scenes and a well written script that doesn't get the audience lost with all the technology and science mumbo jumbo. The plus side to Iron Man 3 is that you will be able to see lots and lots of Iron Man suits fight together in a huge battle near the end and the rebranded War Machine (Iron Patriot) making a few appearances in the film. With a running time of 130 minutes there were times where I didn't want the move to end so quickly because it was that awesome to watch!!
Remember to wait and watch a little scene after the credits.
